Why I Love Thrifting (& how I do it)

a lookbook -- just a couple of cute outfits I thrifted this summer

So, let me start by saying that I love shopping. Not 'buy the first cute thing I see' shopping -- but, really searching and finding the hidden gems. I genuinely get so excited when I find something that I love, ESPECIALLY when I find it for a good price...I mean, who doesn't?

When I want something in particular, sometimes I can't seem to find it or I do and just hold off on making the purchase in hopes that I'll find it somewhere else for a better price. Let me tell you...my patience has paid off because on multiple occasions I have stumbled across some of the exact items I wanted AT THE THRIFT SHOP (not all at once of course, I'm not that good). But, I would say it's a combination of luck & the way I shop.

*story time*...I have a brown pair of lace up sandals that I've had for years and I wanted a black pair so bad, but had no idea where to get them. One day, I went to a buy & sell shop and found a new/never worn pair in my exact size (they're what I'm wearing in the video). I raved about it for so long and I still do because that was probably one of my greatest accomplishments.

So if you love shopping without over-spending -- here are my tips if you need a little guidance (most of these tips can go for any kind of store, really):

1. Check multiple stores
where I live, there are so many different thrift shops -- variety is key

2. *for clothing* Check more than one size
as you know, sizing is so weird when it comes to clothes & shoes, I'm never the same exact size for every brand and style -- look at the size above and below your 'usual'

3. REALLY look
don't skim...the racks and shelves are usually jammed full & you'll be surprised at what you find if you take the time

4. Be patient
chances are, these places aren't super organized so it might take you longer to search -- embrace the process and don't get discouraged if you can't find what you're looking for that day because people are constantly bringing new stuff to the stores everyday

Why You Should Donate & Buy

1. you are de-cluttering and making room for new things without throwing them away
(there are also second-hand shops that you can actually sell your items to -- kinda like poshmark, but you get $ right away)

2. you are helping reduce the amount of stuff that gets thrown into lanfills

3. you are supporting businesses that help families/people by giving them affordable options
